The power source problem could be dealt via high-density batteries, 
wireless power transmission using the same principles of wireless 
unthethered brain implants and space-based solar power satellites. You 
just beam the energy to it. There used to be some plans floating around 
the web for giant tesla coils on the side of the road as a way to 
transmit energy to electric vehicles.

I don't know. I also don't know if *mechanical* motion is so much 
needed. The only mechanical motion you should ever be doing is as a 
whole. The NASA spaceships typically have no moving internal parts 
except the molecules of gas that eventually ignite and burn. Solid 
state is the way to go. Knowing this, you'd need something that could 
push enough volts through the system.
