First order of business would be some simple experiments mimicing common
protocols. Basically, you need to go identify protocols and figure out
what they could be used for, then come up with a neat way to show to
yourself [or others] that you know what they mean and can be used for.
Then you can move on to some other ideas, like trying to build a DNA
syntehsizer if you want to. Until then, running a diverse bacteria farm
might be enough fun. Once you have a stable supply, can you try
directed evolution experiments? And so on.
