Charles S. Peirce Studies
`Who is the most original and the most versatile intellect that the Americas have so far produced? The answer "Charles S. Peirce" is uncontested, because any second would be so far behind as not to be worth nominating. [He was] mathematician, astronomer, chemist, geodesist, surveyor, cartographer, metrologist, spectroscopist, engineer, inventor; psychologist, philologist, lexicographer, historian of science, mathematical economist, lifelong student of medicine; book reviewer, dramatist, actor, short story writer; phenomenologist, semiotician, logician, rhetorician and metaphysician.`

BioCyc Open Chemical Database
The BioCyc Open Chemical Database (BOCD) is a collection of chemical compound data from the BioCyc databases. Most of the compounds act as substrates in enzyme-catalyzed metabolic reactions, but some compounds serve as enzyme activators, inhibitors, or cofactors. Chemical structures are provided for the majority of compounds. The compounds include extensive lists of synonyms, and have undergone several types of quality control, including validation by a reaction-balance checker applied to the BioCyc databases.

eMedicine - Disorders of Taste and Smell : Article by Donald A Leopold, MD
Disorders of Taste and Smell - Introduction Disorders of taste and smell generally have been difficult to diagnose and treat, often because of a lack of knowledge and understanding of these senses and their disease states. An alteration in taste or smell may be a secondary process in various disease states, or it may be the primary complaint.A 1994 survey revealed that 2.7 million American adults have an olfactory problem, and 1.1 million report a gustatory problem. An earlier ...\x02\x02* Toxicity of systemic or inhaled drugs (eg, aminoglycosides, formaldehyde) can contribute to olfactory dysfunction. Many other medications and compounds may alter smell sensitivity, including alcohol, nicotine, organic solvents, and direct application of zinc salts.

Justified Generalization: Acquiring Procedures from Examples (Andreae,P. M., 1985)
This thesis describes an implemented system called NODDY for acquiring procedures from examples presented by a teacher. Acquiring procedures from examples involves several different generalization tasks. Generalization is an underconstrained task, and the main issue of machine learning is how to deal with this underconstraint. The thesis presents two principles is to exploit domain based constraints. The second principle is to aviod spurious generalizations be requiring justification before adapting a generalization. NODDY demonstrates several different ways of justifying a generalization and proposes a way of ordering and searching a space of candidate generalizations based on how much evidence would be required to justify each generalization. Acquiring procedures also involves three types of constructive generalization: inferring loops ( a kind of group), inferring complex reactions and state variables, and inferring predicates. NODDY demonstrates three constructive generalization for these kinds of generalization. Keywords: Machine learning, Constraining generalization, Justification of generalization.*LEARNING MACHINES, *LEARNING, THESES, VARIABLES.

Fluid mechanics is one of the oldest and broadest fields of engineering. It encompasses aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, vortex dynamics, gas dynamics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), convection heat transfer, flows of turbomachinery, acoustics, biofluids, physical oceanography, atmospheric dynamics, wind engineering, and the dynamics of two-phase flows. Modern design of aircraft, spacecraft, automobiles, ships, land and marine structures, power and propulsion systems, or heat exchangers is impossible without a clear understanding of the relevant fluid mechanics. Virginia Tech\'s Fluid Mechanics faculty comprises some of the nation\'s top researchers in this dynamic field. The purpose of our site is to provide you with a survey of the expertise found here in beautiful Southwest Virginia. Whether you are a prospective graduate student, a prospective undergraduate student, or a practicing engineer looking for expert advice, we hope you will find these pages helpful.
